Chapter 2 of 7

2021, unity, blender and chaos

the game dev phase — 2021, unity, blender and chaos

the game dev phase

made two games, jumped into Brackeys Game Jam 2021.2, then built two more with friends.

unironically one of the biggest phases of my life. i haven't made a game in over two years and i still proudly call myself a game dev. (yeah i know. i gotta get back into it. crying emoji irl.)

it started when some of my friends went "let's learn unity". we were already nerds who loved playing games, and by then we were nerds who could code, so making our own was the obvious next step.

so i did what every beginner does and binged Brackeys' 3D game tutorial. came out of it having built two small games from scratch. never published either of them, but they taught me a lot.

Brackeys Game Jam 2021.2

my first real game jam, and holy hell it was a blast.

i put in hours every single day. learning unity, opening blender for the first time (a disaster), designing levels, debugging like a madman. i made everything in that game myself, including the janky ass 3d models. my pc back then was such a potato that a few extra vertices in blender would make it combust, so everything had to stay low poly as hell.

i finished and submitted it though. a basic shooter with a small platformer level at the end. graphics were trash. i was proud.

then came the part i wasn't expecting, which was the community. i spent hours rating other people's games, reading comments and watching feedback roll in. i even speedran one of the jam entries and put the run on youtube just for fun.

final stats:

not great numbers. but it was my first game ever and it meant the world to me.

the games after that

after that jam i made two more with friends:

  • Project Addax, my first time working with a team on a Brackeys jam. coordinating was absolute chaos, but i learned a lot about actually building something with other people.
  • Boka Robi, a brainrotted cursed game we made in a single day at a friend's house. no plan. pure vibes.

and that was the game dev arc in full swing. i miss this shit. i really do need to get back into it.
